BRIEF
The site is located in the foothills of the Himalayas and is surrounded by exquisite nature at the outskirts
of Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. The main aim of the architect in deriving the plan was to least disturb the
ecology of the site. Hence the entire campus was seen as clusters of individual blocks, each sitting on independent plinths. The circulation is developed in the form of a loop that connects various blocks. The plinth continuously varies in levels all along the site in accordance with the site contours. The planning aspects of the built mass have made the insertion minimal and sensible, admitting nature by retaining the soil and vegetation of the site to a certain level.
DESIGN CHALLENGES faced off/on site ?
- How do we go about the built space without scattering the landscape?
- How can the site be reflected through the architectural design ?
- What building materials to be used? Site accessibility is a challenge in terms of logistics.
- How to bring together design elements of Rishikesh's rich yoga heritage.
- How to incorporate passive measures in the design viz. solar, rain water channelization.
- Finding cost effective measures, using native skills/ resources for the overall experience of the
space.
- How to use major tree positioning and indigenous flora for the best result.
- and finally how to integrate traditional values into contemporary architecture.

DESIGN
Building green is not about adding a little more efficiency in reducing power, water and material
consumption but is about creating building that optimizes the use of local ecology, Local material, flora and fauna, and most importantly preserving the complete nature cycle as it was in its unbuilt form.By catering to such sustainable design, the negative impact on the environment human health and Ecosystem at large, get reduced thus improving the performance during the building life cycle. Careful and detailed consideration is given to above parameters to water, energy, building materials and solid waste. If you look at all these design parameters, you’ll realize that our traditional architecture has been very ‘green’.
